The State Hermitage is the largest museum not only of Saint-Petersburg, but of the whole country. It ranks among the 4 largest museums in the world, such as the Louvre in Paris, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum in NY. It does not even matter would you prefer paintings or sculptures, beautiful interiors, historical background or applied art; here everyone can find an artwork of particular interest. There are about 3000000 items on display, so to stand in front of each one for a minute would take you 16 years (12 hours a day). Happily, your licensed and experienced guide has a special 2h route to cover only the pearls of the collection).
Russian Museum. There are more than 400 000 pieces Russian art here on display. Russian Art is really unique as it has successfully covered the huge gap in between European Secular Art of Enlightenment and medieval religious art of Moskovian Russia in 1,5 centuries only! Although the very first secular pictures and sculptures appeared in Russia not until Peter’s the Great times (18th cent) and were quite awkward, by the middle of the 19th century Russian Academy of Fine Arts managed to achieve the same level with the European Academies and eventually came to the very foreground of avant-garde in the beginning of the 20th century. Russian Museum is the best place to trace the development of Russian art from medieval icons to such names as Malevich (his famous Black Square is here on display), Roerich, Vrubel, Filonov and many others.
Faberge Museum is really unique: opened recently, in 2013 it is private owned by V. Vekselberg, who managed to acquire an outstanding collection of 3000 items, all had been produced in Russia (19th-20th c), all had been taken out of the country by the immigrants after Russian Revolution of 1917. V. Vekselberg succeeded to purchase the collection of 9 imperial Easter Eggs from M. Forbes’ family. These 9 and 4 more ester eggs, splendid interiors, icons, pictures, items of stone carving, silverware and many more are on display here. No doubt, Faberge Museum definitely worth seeing!
Savior on the Spilt Blood Cathedral is probably the most recognizable "Russian" building in our city, spiritual highlight of the tour. Built at the very end of the 19th century, it turned into a monument to assassinated Russian emperor Alexander II, and also became the biggest museum of mosaic art in the world (more than 7000 m2 of inner space are covered with mosaics). The cathedral has very rich and dramatic history, as well as the city of Saint-Petersburg-Leningrad.
